Chapter 44 - Secrets?

Shen An took Bai Li out.

She was not wearing sunglasses and a mask. When she was pulled downstairs, the nervous consciousness in her body had not yet fully awakened, and her tears were still flowing. When Shen An brought her to the garden, her tears could barely stop.

"Where are we going?" She raised her hand to wipe her tears, her voice had a strong nasal sound, and her body's center of gravity moved back unconsciously, wanting to go home.

"To buy some food." Shen An held her hand, pulled her hat down, wiped away her tears, and pulled her forward.

There was a bakery next to the community. Shen An went in and ordered three desserts, a glass of hot milk and a cold drink.

Bai Li waited at the door, not daring to come in, even though there was only one clerk inside.

Shen An came out with the packing bag and led Bai Li into the community. There was a pavilion at the end. He put down the things, found a tissue and wiped it on the stone bench before letting Bai Li sit down.

It had just rained last night, and the afternoon air had a refreshing coolness. The sunlight was not too bright, shining through the branches and leaves, casting a golden light on the ground.

A few sparrows were chirping on the trees, and in the distance there were the noisy sounds of children, mixed with the laughter of adults. There was no one in sight, but a harmonious and happy family scene appeared in front of Bai Li’s eyes.

She felt relaxed for no reason.

Shen An took out a mango tapioca* from the bag and handed it to her, then picked up a fork, "Can we exchange secrets?"

*

Bai Li’s fingers trembled as she took the fork, but she said nothing.

Shen An picked up the hot milk, opened it and handed it to her. He picked up the cold drink and drank it before saying, "I actually still have relatives. My parents are still alive. They divorced when I was nine years old."

Bai Li listened blankly, her fingers unconsciously clenched in her palms.

There was no emotion on Shen An's face, and his voice was very low, "My mother left and never came back."

"My dad didn't care about me and left me to my grandpa." He thought of something and smiled softly. "My grandpa was an old man with a very stubborn temper. He was very kind and likes small animals. He was sure that I would be the same in the future. He was an excellent veterinarian, so he took me with him during surgeries and let me watch him. At that time, I was only nine years old."

"He taught me for sixteen years, but when he left, I didn't even see him for the last time." Shen An's eyes dimmed, "I often dream about that day, and I always ran as fast as I could in the corridor of the hospital, thinking this time I could finally see him for the last time, but I fail every time.”

Bai Li sniffed and tears fell down.

"I originally wanted to comfort you, not make you cry again." Shen An chuckled, took a tissue and handed it to her.

Bai Li cried and apologized, "I'm sorry..."

"Sorry for what?" he asked softly.

"Obviously...this incident...makes you...very sad...you still...think...to comfort me..." Bai Li covered her eyes with both hands, tears overflowing from her fingers.

Shen An never thought that just one sentence from the little girl would make his insides ache. He hugged her into his arms and patted her back, "It's over now, don't cry."

Bai Li shook her head, with tears still on her face. Her nasal voice was very heavy, and her voice had a soft crying tone, "I can't stop..."

She cried for both her and Shen An. They all carry wounds from the past in their hearts, and every time they’re opened, the wounds will bleed again.

"If you can't stop, let it out." Shen An hugged her, his voice was low, but it was particularly reassuring, "I will be with you from now on, don't be afraid."
