Chapter 43 - Is it because of me?

After Shen An left, Bai Li realized that he had taken away the sheets he had changed last night.

Thinking of last night, her whole face turned red again. She got into the blanket on the sofa and burrowed in.

After half an hour, she climbed out of the blanket, picked up her phone and took a look. Dai Mei sent her a message, asking her how long it would take to finish the urgent PPT.

She quickly replied the message, [One hour.

Her work efficiency has not been high recently because of Shen An.

After making an hour-long plan, she quickly finished the PPT and sent it to Dai Mei. She then discovered that there was a message from her eldest sister on her phone, asking her if she wanted to go home. It was her father's birthday soon.

Bai Li replied: [No.

Then stared at the screen in a daze.

She had a nightmare last night. In the dream, her father kept beating several children with a belt. She saw her thin self huddled in the corner. She was beaten the worst because she cried too much.

There were four brothers and sisters at home, so they would be very noisy, either fighting for toys or watching TV. That day, her father came home and saw the house in a mess, with the piercing noise of children in his ears. He took out his belt and started beating them one by one.

Bai Li was the closest and was blindsided. She often dreamed of this scene as an adult. In the dream, she kept crying and begging for mercy. She kept calling her mother for help. Finally, her mother arrived. They fought and smashed the pots and pans in the house, and her parents struggled with each other in front of them.

She watched this scene in horror, went forward and hugged her father's waist, crying and begging him to let go of her mother, but she was thrown out by her father with great force.

The eldest sister came over and pulled her up. The four brothers and sisters hugged each other shivering, not even daring to cry too loudly.

Bai Li wiped the tears on her face, but the more she wiped, the more she cried. Every time she thought about the past, she would cry for a long time. The fear was engraved in her bones, preventing her from living like a normal person as an adult.

She has low self-esteem and is sensitive, timid and riddled with anxiety, like a sewer rat. She only dares to hide at home and can’t even go out normally. She’s afraid of her own shadow, terrified with getting in contact with others, and dreads knocks on the door and phone calls.

She tried to be better, but it wasn’t that easy.

She covered her face and cried so hard that the kitten in the cat cage meowed at her several times. She sniffed and held back her tears and said, "I know, I don't want to cry either...but I... I can't bear it. I’m so scared……"

The screen of the silent mobile phone lit up.

Shen An called, but she looked at it with tears in her eyes and didn't answer.

The phone continued ringing, over and over again, tirelessly.

Bai Li never answered. She hugged the blanket and kept crying. When there was a knock on the door, she stopped her tears in fear.

A dark voice came from outside the door, his breath full of anxiety and uneasiness, "Bai Li! Are you in there?!"

Bai Li hurriedly wiped away the tears on her face, walked towards the door and said, "I... I'm here."

Shen An paused and deliberately lowered his voice, "Are you crying?"

"No." Bai Li's eyelashes trembled, and another tear fell.

"Open the door," he whispered, "Let me see you."

"No... no." Bai Li cried and shook her head.

"Be good, open the door." Shen An coaxed her in a low voice, "If you don't answer my call, I'm going to go crazy with worry. Open the door and let me see you, okay?"

Bai Li shook her head, but her fingers trembled as she opened the door.

As soon as Shen An came in, he saw that the little girl's eyes were red from crying, her face was covered with tears, her nose was red, and her whole body was still huffing and puffing.

He hugged her into his arms and asked, "Did I hurt you last night?"

Bai Li cried and shook her head.

"Is it because of me?" he asked softly.

She shook her head again, tears falling heavily.

Shen An wiped away her tears with his fingertips and said softly: "Good girl, don't be afraid. Tell me who b*llied you, and I'll beat them to death, okay?"

"No... Wuwu..." Bai Li burst into tears. She gasped and her whole shoulders were hunched over from crying, "I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."

Even now, she's still apologizing.

Shen An was so distressed that he didn't know what to do. He hugged her in his arms, lowered his head and kissed her, and said in a gentle voice, "I'm here, don't be afraid of anything."

The grievance and sourness in Bai Li’s chest accumulated to the extreme. She clutched the man's clothes tightly, laid in his arms and cried loudly.

Shen An didn't know that except for Dai Mei, her best friend, Bai Li would never cry like this in front of another person.
