 Chapter 3 - Incredible Dream

Shen An lives on Hutong Street.

The house is old with neighbors from his grandfather's generation. He parked his motorcycle in the garage, said hello to the old men and women who came downstairs to take out the garbage, and then went up to the second floor.

The house is a three-bedroom house with a large space. Apart from some dampness on cloudy days, the house is great.

He went to his grandfather's room to read some medical books, then closed the door and came out. He then played some single player games on the sofa in the living room.

Messages kept coming in on his phone. He quit the game and clicked on WeChat with 99+ messages. Many of them were women who had been to the clinic. They sent him messages asking if he wanted to come out to eat together.

He receives dozens of messages like this every day.

The latest one was from a woman in the club with whom he played badminton for half an hour last night.

The woman said: [Sorry, I have something to do today.

For Shen An, whether she comes to play or not was none of his business. There’s no need to apologize to him.

Shen An knew that she just wanted him to reply, even one word, but he didn't.

The other party was obviously unwilling to give up and asked: [Are you going back? I worked overtime tonight and I just came back. I haven’t eaten yet. Have you eaten?

Shen An looked through the chat history. He had added her two months ago when he first joined the club. She would send one or two messages every day, saying things like "You look so handsome playing today", "Wow, you can definitely play at a pro level", "Great game!", and  "Shen An, your name sounds very nice."

Shen An also replied "Hello" when the other party greeted him for the first time, but other than that, he never replied again.

The other party sent another message: [I heard that you’re a veterinarian. Where’s your clinic? My friend's cat was sick and he asked me if there was a clinic I would recommend.

After Shen An sent the address, he closed the phone interface. He stood on the balcony, watered the plants, and leaned on the railing to light a cigarette.

There was a pot of flowers that had dried up in the sun. When he moved into the living room, he thought of the girl he saw at the door of the clinic at noon for no reason.

Isn't it hot when she's dressed like that?

He raised his eyebrows slightly, and poured a lot of water into the flower pot with the watering can in his hand.

Because of the incident during the day, he had an bizarre dream that night. He saw the girl in black on the balcony, and he poured water on her head with a watering can.

When the alarm clock rang, he realized that he had had an extremely ridiculous dream, and he smiled, which rarely happens.

At seven o'clock in the morning, he went to the clinic with breakfast. Miao Zhanpeng was so sleepy that he had fallen asleep on the sofa. Tan Yuanyuan was wiping the table and mopping the floor.

Shen An walked to the front desk and looked through last night's duty records.

"Brother An, there was a call last night, a pregnant cow went in labor and needed assistance in the delivery of the calf..." Tan Yuanyuan said and laughed, "When Brother Zhanpeng told me about it, I laughed so hard."

Seeing Shen An's expressionless face, she stopped laughing, coughed lightly and said, "...that's not funny at all."

There were two appointments for sterilization this morning, and one for a follow up check-up. After Shen An finished flipping through the pages, he entered the office and put on a white coat. He came out and patted Miao Zhanpeng on the shoulder, "You can go home and sleep."

"Ah, I'm sorry." Miao Zhanpeng jumped up reflexively and rubbed his face, "I just wanted to take a nap."

"Leave after breakfast." Shen An pointed at the soy milk buns on the table before entering the office.

Tan Yuanyuan waited for him to leave, then said to Miao Zhanpeng, "Brother An seems unhappy today."

"Really?" Miao Zhanpeng patted his face, trying to wake himself up, "I feel like he's quite happy today."

Tan Yuanyuan was extremely surprised, "Huh?"

She was about to ask something when she saw the person at the door and suddenly shouted into the office at the top of her lungs, "Brother An! She, she, she, she's here again!"

Miao Zhanpeng looked towards the door.

A girl dressed in black walked quickly towards the clinic from a distance, holding a cat in her arms.

Miao Zhanpeng took a closer look and saw that the cat was covered in blood.

When Shen An came out, the girl in black had already carried the cat to the door. She was still wearing a sweater and a beanie, a mask and sunglasses on her face. She lowered her head and didn't look at anyone, only holding the cat tightly in her arms.

Miao Zhanpeng quickly opened the door and asked her, "What happened? Tell me briefly."

He wanted to take the cat from her hand, but saw her step back.

When Shen An came over, he took a look at the cat lying in the girl's arms and meowing pitifully. It was not the one from yesterday, but a ragdoll cat*. It was bleeding all over its body including its mouth. The saliva was mixed with blood and was dripping down.

"Is this your cat?" Shen An asked.

Tan Yuanyuan also realized something, she looked at the girl, Bai Li and said, "Yes, I remember you brought a little all white cat yesterday."

Bai Li was speechless and just gave the cat to Shen An. Shen An lowered his eyes and looked at her for a moment, then said to Miao Zhanpeng, "Take the cat for an X-ray exam first."

"Okay." Miao Zhanpeng went to get medical gloves and put them on before taking the cat from Bai Li.

"Hey, you’re covered in blood..." Tan Yuanyuan took a wet tissue and handed it to the girl, "Can you go to the bathroom and wash it off?"

Bai Li lowered her head and took the wet tissue from her hand, and said in a very soft voice, "...thank you."

"You're not mute?!" Tan Yuanyuan was very shocked and covered her mouth apologetically, "I'm sorry, I thought you..."

Far from being mute

The voice was nice and soft, like the cat in her arms.
